FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who are the courses for?

Carrgomm sees health and wellbeing awareness as an important part of our training commitment.

The aim is for all staff to be able to learn the facts about maintaining good nutrition, exercise and recovery (stress and sleep). This knowledge can be applied to ourselves, supporting staff’s wellbeing, as well as being an essential pillar to supporting other people well.

We will be looking to a future where this approach will be routinely embedded into our support plans sitting alongside our person-centred approach.

The starting point is that you yourself have done the training, then you are able to apply the learnt knowledge into supporting people.

How much does it cost?

For Carr Gomm staff, the courses are completely FREE! As long as you sign up through your Carr Gomm email, the course will be free of charge.

How long will the course take to complete?

You can work through the course completely at your own pace on your own schedule.

The course consists of 30 bite-sized lessons, each under 10 minutes.

Each lesson is followed by a short quiz to test your understanding. Don’t worry these are just a tool to ensure you get the most from the lessons and will not be graded or shared with anyone else.

There are also some tasks to complete, these are aimed at helping you to action the key learnings from the course by tracking your health behaviours. If you don’t feel ready to make the changes yourself just now, you are welcome to track a person you support, friend or family member’s health behaviours instead if you have their permission.

If you were to complete one lesson each weekday (Mon-Fri) you would complete the course in 6 weeks. However, you will access the entire course as soon as you enrol. This means if you would like to complete the course quicker you could effectively do so in as little as 1 week, however, we recommend spreading the course out to allow you apply the information in the course.

What happens if I am on annual leave?

As the course is 6 weeks long, we understand that many people will have time off whilst they are completing the course. As the course moves onto a new topic each week, this could result in you falling behind. If you do have time off during the course, then we suggest picking one of two options:

1. If you are still keen to carry on with the course during your annual leave but don’t want to be accessing work emails during this time, then we can set up the course correspondents to go to your personal email account. All you need to do is email your coach and send the email address you would like to use.

2. Catch up when you come back. Each lesson is fairly short, so catching up is easy enough. If you are off for a week, we suggest setting aside an hour when you return. That way you will be up to speed and ready to progress to the next lesson without more lessons piling up.

Can you fail the course?

The course is not graded and you will only be assessed by your application, that is watching the videos, trying the quizes and completing the tasks in the workbook.

You can not pass or fail the quizes, but you must engage in them.

We want the courses to be a learning opportunity that you are able to take forward and implement in the lives of the people whom you support and your own life if you wish. There are no expectations other than participation with the workbook and quizes.

Are Health by Science qualified to give health advice?

When it comes to becoming qualified to work in the health and fitness industry, the entry-level is set pretty low as coaches with zero experience can become qualified in 6 weeks. What makes Health by Science different is that we go above and beyond this required entry-level by some margin.

Our coaches have completed Masters and First Class Honors degrees in Sport and Exercise Science and Physiotherapy, Higher National Diploma courses and specialist exercise certifications.

But these qualifications don’t mean anything without the practical application and experience to back it up. So what really makes our coaches different, is their ability to use all of this experience and education and apply it in a programme that is tailored to your exact goals and preferences.
